Choosing Scripts
For our last project of the year, we chose two scripts we wanted to read together as a class and then perform sections of. When choosing a script we looked at the following criteria:
1) Plot, including type of play and amount of characters
2) Length
3) Literary value
4) Well-know playwrights
Based on this criteria, we chose to read and examine No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre and All My Sons by Arthur Miller.
Here are the scenes we chose to examine in further detail and why:

AXEL:
No Exit P 12-13 I think these two pages could be interesting to act out because at that moment they are talking about the ways they died and about the people they left in the real world. In this scene all three actors speak so it will also give an opportunity to each student to act out the scene. In this scene Estelle slightly reveals her true colors as well and there are various emotions present. In the scene they also give out details of how hell supposably looks like and I like the perspective and this is why I chose this scene. All My Sons P 64-65 This passage of the play is important because it defines what the main preoccupation is throughout the play. Knowing if Larry is alive or dead, will Larry ever come back? I think that it gives off a very strong emotional scene and it kind of wraps up the whole play. This scene also foreshadows Keller’s suicide and conveys what the mother thinks about Ann. It is just a ball of emotions. |
ARTUR:
No Exit P 20-21 I personally like this scene because I know people like Estelle and this scene grab the ignorance in her and twits it. Furthermore, this is a important point in the play, given that it shows off a lot about one of the characters (Estelle). The author also shows a lot of Inez' character. All My Sons P 28- 30 From: Keller: Annie, the day the news came about Larry he was in the cell nest to me... Dad. And he cried, Annie... he cried half the night. To: Ann: Oh, Chris, I've been ready a long, long time! I think this scene is very relevant. Although it is not the climax of the play it gives out many important points. What Annie think of her father and Chris declaring to her (adding that she agrees to it). It also shows the joyful interaction between Chris and Keller. |
DANYA:
No Exit P 16-17 I think that we should perform the scene where Garcin speaks of his death, because it’s very revealing in the sense that you learn about how Garcin dies, and what he thinks about his death as well as what Estelle and Inez think of it; because he asks them for their opinion and you see different point of views. It also transmits a message to the reader that I particularly liked about standing up for yourself and the consequences of it. All My Sons P 68-69 I chose these pages simply because they are so revealing and they answer many questions that one has throughout the play. Such as what is in the letter, and what they do when they finally admit that Keller was the guilty person rather than Annie and George’s father. I was really interested in finding out what the letter said because of their reactions to it. In my opinion it is a very intense and dramatic scene, where Keller kills himself and we figure out that Larry really just committed suicide. I find that these pages are the most interesting in the whole play and I really enjoy them. Throughout the play things seem fine, and not as intense and when I see these pages they really catch my attention which is something that not many pages of the play do. |
